How To Hang Window Treatments

Home repair expert Henry Harrison shares some basic tips for hanging window treatments. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison rates this job as an easy one.

Tools:

pencil

folding rule

power drill

safety glasses

screwdriver

blinds and mounting hardware

Steps:

1. Use the folding rule to measure the width and height of the inside of the window frame. Go to the store and pick out some window treatments. Most home improvement stores will cut them to size.

2. Mark mounting points for the brackets on the top board of the window frame. Bring the brackets out far enough from the window so the window treatments do not hang up on the window. About 1-1/4 inch should do.

3. Pre-drill holes, then mount the window treatments bracket with a manual screwdriver. Remember to wear safety goggles when working with any power tools.

4. Place the end caps on the window treatments and snap them into place (figure C).

Hints:

Follow the directions for the specific window treatments you're installing.

Having an assistant to hold blinds in position makes life so much easier.

Make sure that the window treatments brackets are positioned correctly so that the blinds will be centered in the window and, more importantly, will not catch on the window frame.
