Window Treatments
There are many options to consider when designing your own custom window treatments. Many people associate full window treatments with their parents or even their grand parents-think matched drape and curtain sets or vintage mini blind treatments. There is nothing wrong with these traditional choices, but these days there are many artistic window treatments available for the savvy home designer.
One of the first considerations when designing artistic window treatments is to take in the entire atmosphere of the room. The key to great window treatments is to blend them harmoniously with the room's décor. Pull in key color schemes from throughout the room to really bring out a window treatment's appeal. Don't overdo it, but if there is a crème color in the sofa or the molding trim, consider matching it within a few shades on the drapes.
Another thing to consider with artistic window treatments is the lighting effect. A designer can either go with a single treatment, or layer a couple treatments for a more complex and comprehensive light control system. In this case, it depends how important light control and privacy are to the room.
One appealing option is to combine drapes and shades for an aesthetically warm but effective system. Install shades capable of blackout light blocking, such as wooden shades or full mini blinds, and combine them with diaphanous café curtains or hanging drapes. This way, drawing the drapes will offer a minor measure of privacy and/or light control while still offering a warm and aesthetic lighting effect, and pairing it with the full shade system will ensure complete control of both privacy and opacity.
